When we launched Docker in 2013, we kicked off the container revolution, which completely changed how cloud infrastructure is designed and consumed. But what was the purpose of this revolution, and have we accomplished it yet?

Containerization, and the unprecedented wave of cloud-native infrastructure it enabled, started as detour on a longer journey: the quest to solve application delivery to the Cloud, once and for all. The detour was made necessary by the wreck of Platform-as-a-Service, which attempted a more direct route, and failed.

In this talk I will tell the story of this 10-year detour, how it all started, and all the exciting places we can go now that it has finally succeeded.
